Sculptra, and why the change is gradual

Sculptra is a different kind of injectable. It has a liquid consistency, and rather than providing volume itself, it prompts your body to build collagen. The volume is yours. Results can hold for up to two years.

What Sculptra is and what it does

Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid, which sets it apart from most dermal fillers built on hyaluronic acid. Its main function is to stimulate your own collagen production. Collagen provides structural support and elasticity, and production declines with age. Injected into the deeper layers of skin, Sculptra triggers the natural collagen process, producing gradual improvement in texture, volume and overall appearance.

The second advantage is subtlety. Traditional filler adds volume at the moment of injection. Sculptra works over weeks, across sessions spaced several weeks apart, so change appears gradually and stays in proportion with your features. Nobody sees an overnight difference. You simply look gradually better rested, and it lasts.

It is commonly used to restore volume and contour where age related loss shows most, including the cheeks, temples and jawline. In April 2023 the FDA approved Sculptra for cheek wrinkles. Because the collagen rebuilds underlying structure, results often hold two years or more, which appeals to patients who would rather not return frequently.

The procedure

1. Consultation. We review your goals, medical history and expectations, and answer your questions before anything is scheduled.
2. Preparation. Injection sites are marked and cleaned. We mix the product with a local anaesthetic for comfort.
3. Injection. We use a fine needle and place product in the specific areas where collagen development is wanted. The number of injections depends on your plan.
4. Duration. Most appointments run thirty to sixty minutes depending on the area and your anatomy.
5. Aftercare. You will receive specific instructions, including massaging the treated areas for several days so the product distributes evenly. Ice packs help with swelling and bruising.
6. Side effects. As with any injectable, expect the possibility of temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness at the injection sites. These usually settle within a few days.
7. Recovery. There is little to no downtime, though we ask you to avoid intense exercise and excessive sun or heat for a few days.

Results and timeline

Sculptra is not immediate. It works by building collagen over time, so the full effect takes weeks to months to appear.

You may notice some swelling from the injections themselves, which settles within a few days. Real change generally becomes visible around six to eight weeks after the first treatment. Optimal results usually require multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart, which we plan together. Timeline and degree of improvement vary with age, skin condition and treatment area.
